2016-17 Fifth Grade Viking Visits
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ's)
What are Viking Visits?: Each fifth grade student over the course of the school year creates a Learner Resume. The Learner Resume is an accumulation of numerous activities completed throughout the year to help the student learn more about them self with the hope of becoming a more successful learner. After completing a Learner Resume, each student's parents/guardians will be invited to a student-led Viking Visit conference with their student and the school counselor.
Why Viking Visits?: Viking Visits are meant to be a positive experience for all and allows the students to share what they have learned in the counseling room to help them be a better learner. In the past students have greatly enjoyed sharing their school experience in the counseling room with someone at home. Many parents have expressed that they saw a self-esteem boost in their students also since it allows them to boast about their hard work and accomplishments over the year. While uniquely named, fifth grade (or elementary) conferences are practiced in many districts across the nation to help students learn how to function at their utmost potential by learning about themselves and taking responsibility for their future.
Another reason for Viking Visits:
Wisconsin Statute 115.28(59) states: "Ensure that, beginning in 2017-18 school year, every school board is providing academic and career planning services to pupils enrolled in grades 6-12 in the school district."
When are Viking Visits?: Viking Visits are held during the school day in April or May depending on Learner Resume completion. Times and days are set for each student within a one-two week time frame; if the time/day initially set does not work, the parent/guardian should simply email/call the counselor and your time can of course be changed for your convenience. Times and dates will be sent out in March. I completely understand how busy families are and am happy to work around your schedule to find a time that works.
How long are Viking Visits for?: Viking Visits occur once and are about 20-30 minutes long.
Who are Viking Visits for?: Viking Visits involve each fifth grade student individually with his/her parent/guardian as well as the school counselor. If a parent/guardian is unable to attend a conference in person at any time or day, phone conferences are possible as well.
