I have been sharing much more information on the Gibraltar School Counseling Department Facebook page (look us up!) than on my blog mainly because it is simpler and seems to be more popular. Sometimes I come across materials/resources that are diffidcult to post on Facebook. The following document is a checklist for a large range of age groups for which Life Skills they should be capable of at that age:

Feel free to look at the newsletter that gets sent out to Gibraltar staff each Monday for resources related to Mindfulness!: At Gibraltar, we have "Mindful Mondays." This merely consists of Mindfulness based activities/videos/tips/research/etc. being sent out through our Gibraltar School Counseling Department Facebook page for parents/community members, this weebly blog for those who do not have Facebook, and through email to other staff members. Stay tuned on our Facebook page or this blog for more fun Mindfulness based activities to use at home! The scripts below should be read out loud calmly and slowly to the child. For children who struggle with getting to sleep at night, reading a script before bed might be helpful. Welcome back to a new year Gibraltar students, staff and families! We've had a great few days back and I'm looking forward to the rest of the year. Mrs. Roberts, the 7-12 counselor, and I created a Facebook page over the summer together for the School Counseling Department. We will be posting all sorts of information about Gibraltar's School Counseling Program as well as parenting tips/articles: If you have a Facebook account already, in the search box type in "Gibraltar School Counseling Department." If you do not have a Facebook account and want to start one, simply go to www.facebook.com and create an account. Please contact me if you have any questions ([email protected]). Feel free to post articles/information/comments as long as it doesn't include personal information about a person or student. Gibraltar counselors cannot guarantee confidentiality through social media; as always, please contact us by email or phone for personal/individual concerns. I will be posting more often through the Facebook group than this blog as it much simpler and more commonly used. Thanks and have a wonderful year!
There are a number of opportunities for our students to experience this summer right in Door County! Summer camps provide a great way for your child to socialize n a somewhat structured setting. A few opportunities include: Write On, Door County offers classes for young writers and free family writing activities. For example, Katie McKy will be visiting to offer two two-day creativity classes (one in Newport State Park and one at Crossroads). I've had the pleasure of seeing Katie McKy present workshops at two different schools and was amazed at her brilliant strategies. (To register use the contact information found at the green text above^). Camp Cool at the Northern Door Children's Center offers a camp for children ages 5-10. There is a limit of 39 children per day. (To register, feel free to use the contact information found at the green text above^). Northern Door YMCA offers a number of summer camps such as art camp (Ages 4+), summer S.L.A.M. (Ages 4-6; Songs, Literature, Art and Movement), Explorers Camp (Ages 4-5), Adventurer Camp (Ages 5- entering Grade 1), Dance Camp (ages 5-12), Gymnastics Camp (Ages 6+), Traveling Camp (entering grades 2-3), Navigator Camp (Grades 4+), Peak Performance (ages 11+), and a ton of other classes and programs. (Promoting Access to Help for families with special needs) also offers a summer camp and a youth group (Click the green text above for contact information^) Wisconsibs offers a summer camp for children who are siblings of children with disabilities. As always, please let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to get the information for you. I will continue to add summer opportunities as I receive them. I hope you all have a wonderful, long summer!
A few posts back I posted some fun summer activity ideas to do outdoors, but here is a list of activities for kids on those rainy or hot days when they can't be outside:

I strongly believe in a Love and Logic approach with kids. If you're not yet familiar with Love and Logic, it is an approach to raising kids that fosters loving support all the while still expecting children to be respectful and responsible. Love and Logic founders include Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, M.D. who have a cumulative total of 75 years working with and raising children.
Not only is there a wealth of resources available to purchase but the founders also offer plenty of free resources as well on their webpage: http://www.loveandlogic.com/t-Free-Articles-and-Handouts-for-Parents.aspx. An article I recently found included tens of resources involving ideas about positive activities to encourage your child to do (or do with them). Activities fall into nine categories: outings, outdoor activities, arts and crafts, philanthropy, games and activities, computer activities, word/alphabet games, math/number activities, and physical activities. Most of these activities aim to foster positive academic and social/emotional growth: http://www.loveandlogic.com/t-homework-help.aspx. I also have a few Love and Logic books at school that parents or staff are more than welcome to borrow! |
