I strongly believe in a Love and Logic approach with kids. If you're not yet familiar with Love and Logic, it is an approach to raising kids that fosters loving support all the while still expecting children to be respectful and responsible. Love and Logic founders include Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, M.D. who have a cumulative total of 75 years working with and raising children.
Not only is there a wealth of resources available to purchase but the founders also offer plenty of free resources as well on their webpage: http://www.loveandlogic.com/t-Free-Articles-and-Handouts-for-Parents.aspx. An article I recently found included tens of resources involving ideas about positive activities to encourage your child to do (or do with them). Activities fall into nine categories: outings, outdoor activities, arts and crafts, philanthropy, games and activities, computer activities, word/alphabet games, math/number activities, and physical activities. Most of these activities aim to foster positive academic and social/emotional growth: http://www.loveandlogic.com/t-homework-help.aspx. I also have a few Love and Logic books at school that parents or staff are more than welcome to borrow!
